We aim to ensure that all children develop a deep understanding of mathematics through engaging and accessible teaching strategies.

Our Maths Curriculum is fully aligned to the 2014 National Curriculum and focuses on depth of understanding, to encourage learning that builds.

Our approach is to enhance mathematical understanding, enjoyment and achievement for every child. We encourage children to see learning as a journey; mistakes are part of that journey and a vital opportunity for children to reflect and deepen their understanding.

The National Curriculum for Mathematics aims to ensure that all children:
  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

Our Mathematics curriculum ensures that children have a full understanding of mathematical concepts, methods and relationships between the different areas of maths. It is important to us that children have strong arithmetic knowledge, and can recall key facts in maths that support maths fluently.

We ensure that all children are given plenty of opportunities to explain their reasoning within Maths lessons. Through carefully selected tasks and effective questioning, all children are given opportunities to conjecture, generalise and justify.

Reasoning about maths is planned so that it threads through all lessons. Teachers ensure that well selected, differentiated mathematical activities, have a reasoning element. This is achieved through the use of differentiated challenges that stretch and challenge all children.

Our Maths Calculation Policy which shows the progression of strategies we teach in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We have adopted the Southwark Calcualtion Policy.
